Fernando Pessoa's enigmatic text proposes that all our ideas of self, God, and the world come from within - that our consciousness churns at some fathomless level, like an aimless river, as we try to make sense of the universe. 

Yet, the message is ultimately hopeful. Humans strive for what we know we may never possess and that is our strength. We are undaunted by unattainable oceans because we can imagine the sunlit beach on the other side.
